Abstract

Ethics and moral behavior are foundational aspects of human nature. However, in contemporary times, attention has turned towards the ethical decision-making capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Autonomous Moral Agents (AMA). The rapid evolution of AI has brought about substantial advancements, revolutionizing various facets of society and daily life. Nevertheless, this progress has also raised crucial concerns about the ethical conduct of machines. This article aims to address the following research inquiries:

What are the key machine-related factors that could lead to a moral crisis or ethical quandary?

What model for monitoring machine ethics can be effectively implemented?

Where should a system for monitoring machine ethics be strategically positioned?

The initial section of this article furnishes essential definitions and constructs crucial for comprehending both ethics and machine ethics. Subsequently, a comprehensive review of pertinent literature is presented, encapsulating the theoretical underpinnings that guide the exploration of the aforementioned research questions. Following this, a factor analysis is conducted to delineate the attributes of a well-functioning, ethically unconflicted machine. This analysis is supplemented by a detailed exposition of the corresponding methodology and analytical framework.

Subsequent to this analytical discussion, a multi-tiered model for monitoring machine ethics is put forth. This model is accompanied by an in-depth discourse on the optimal placement of such monitoring systems. By considering these aspects, this article endeavors to provide a comprehensive framework for comprehending and addressing the burgeoning concerns regarding ethical behavior in machines, thereby contributing to the responsible development and deployment of AI and Autonomous Moral Agents.
