Abstract

This research delves into the intricate dynamics of married women's participation in low-paid employment in the context of Bangladesh, a country witnessing rapid economic, social, and environmental changes. Employment, an essential facet of development, fosters shared prosperity and sustenance, compelling governments worldwide to focus on bolstering opportunities for women, a pivotal demographic. As females comprise a significant portion of Bangladesh's population, their contribution to economic and developmental activities is pivotal. This study addresses the multifaceted factors that influence married women's engagement in the labor market, highlighting the social, economic, and demographic dimensions that shape their decisions. The trajectory of women's involvement in the workforce has witnessed transformations over the past three decades, attracting scholarly attention due to its implications for socioeconomic growth. Although the rate of women's labor market participation in Bangladesh has experienced a noticeable increase, it remains lower compared to other South Asian nations. A key aspect of this analysis is the role of education in empowering women to make economic decisions, as demonstrated by empirical evidence. This investigation underscores the interconnectedness of women's empowerment, education, media access, sociocultural norms, household participation, and job opportunities. The research also elucidates the significance of women's economic contributions to their families. Particularly for married women, engaging in low-paid employment presents a means to augment family income, thereby reducing poverty. This phenomenon is accentuated among single mothers who are vulnerable to financial instability. The research further investigates how the evolving wage structure and employment landscape, along with governmental policies promoting gender equality, influence women's participation in the paid workforce. Through a comprehensive review of literature and empirical analysis, this study seeks to unravel the nuanced interplay of factors driving married women's involvement in low-paid employment. By discerning the dynamics that motivate women's economic participation, this research contributes to the broader discourse on gender, labor, and development. The findings hold implications for policymakers, stakeholders, and development agencies seeking to foster inclusive growth and sustainable livelihoods for all segments of society
