CLIMATIC CONDITIONS FOR OPTIMAL RAMBUTAN PRODUCTION IN THE PHILIPPINES

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the potential areas for rambutan production in the Philippines based on agro-climatic factors such as mean temperature, relative humidity, and amount of rainfall. Data on rambutan production and climatic variables were collected from the Region IV-A CALABARZON and 56 synoptic stations across the country. The data were analyzed using geospatial techniques, including correlation analysis, weighted overlay, and suitability modeling. The results show that rambutan production is negatively correlated with altitude, and areas above 700 meters above sea level are not suitable for rambutan production. Using climatic factors, a final thematic map was generated, and four classifications were identified: unsuitable, least suitable, suitable, and highly suitable. Highly suitable areas for rambutan production were found in selected parts of the Ilocos region, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Davao, and Zamboanga. The findings of this study can be used as a baseline for farmer cooperatives and policy makers to improve decision-making on rambutan production. However, further research is needed to consider edaphic characteristics and varietal adaptation for a more comprehensive zoning approach.
