IMMERSIVE TECHNOLOGIES CHALLENGES IN THE TACTILE INTERNET AND INTERNET OF SKILLS
Abstract
The implementation of 5G technology globally is creating opportunities for new application scenarios. However, the integration of immersive technologies such as virtual, mixed, and augmented reality in the Tactile Internet and Internet of Skills present technical challenges. This paper aims to examine and propose system development approaches and architectures for successful integration. The Shared Haptic Virtual Environment (SHVE) is a significant difference between the Tactile Internet and classic XR applications, requiring collaboration and integration with complex input/output extended reality controllers. The main challenges include creating Haptic Devices Pairing Protocols (HDPP) and API architectures for bi-directional logical communication of the XR scene and haptic devices. Coupling and integration of XR systems and haptic devices are essential for mission-critical applications such as remote medical interventions and complex robotized machinery remote operation. The paper proposes an open API block architecture for physically coupling the haptic devices and the XR software application, providing a huge developmental field to stimulate the creation of multiple haptic devices capable of being used in Tactile Internet XR scenarios.
