DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR MANAGERS
Abstract
In today's globalized world, diversity management has become a crucial aspect of managing and valuing human resources within organizations. This systematic literature review aims to understand the challenges and opportunities presented to managers in managing workforce diversity in the 21st century. The study covers a systematic review of 25 journal articles and explores the benefits of diversity management, the role of managers in managing and valuing diversity, and the biggest challenges faced by managers in workforce diversity management.
The study finds that emergence issues in workforce diversity management include multicultural task environments, inter-functional coordination, complexity, and discrimination at work. These challenges are brought about by globalization, outsourcing, and the need to retain diverse and talented human capital in organizations. The paper provides valuable insights into diversity management and suggests a framework for creating a diverse workforce that is productive and performance-driven.
The findings have significant implications for organizational policies and practices aimed at recruiting, retaining, and managing employees from diverse backgrounds and identities. This review highlights the need for managers to adopt new perspectives and strategies to effectively manage and value diversity in the workplace. The study provides directions for future research in the areas of organizational performance, diversity climate perceptions, and organizational culture.
