FROM IDEATION TO IMPLEMENTATION: GREEN PRODUCT INNOVATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN CONSTRUCTION
Abstract
The global market has witnessed an emergence of companies introducing sustainable and environmentally friendly products, signaling a shift towards positive intent and recognition of the importance of environmental sustainability. This transition emphasizes the significance of product innovation and the introduction of new technologies alongside legislative measures. The construction industry, known for its significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption, holds immense potential for achieving environmental and ecological sustainability through green product innovation. By adopting low-energy consumption methods and enhancing resource efficiency, the construction sector can establish benchmarks and promote sustainable practices. Moreover, this sector can create green job opportunities by incentivizing companies to embrace technological innovations that minimize waste production, reduce CO2 emissions, and pursue environmental and ecological practices.
Several instances demonstrate successful collaborations between companies engaged in green design and innovation projects, exchanging knowledge on future technologies. Notably, the Netherlands, renowned for its innovative construction sector, has witnessed the widespread adoption of technological innovations in construction projects. Similarly, Skanska, a Swedish construction company, utilized software tools to optimize logistics and reduce waste in building construction. Such initiatives have led to the development of highly committed and sustainable workforces.
Prominent companies like Clark Construction in the United States and Southern Development Homes have implemented sustainability strategies, training architects and clients to minimize environmental impacts and adopt green building practices. These companies focus on factors such as safety standards, community values, energy efficiency, and waste recycling.
However, some perspectives suggest that the construction industry faces challenges in achieving economic growth through green innovation due to high cost pressures, lengthy project durations, and the use of hazardous chemicals. Recognizing the uncertainties in this sector, the United Nations has invited construction companies to propose sustainable innovation and set sustainable development goals (SDGs).
