REVIEWING THE EVIDENCE: CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS ROLE IN COMMUNITY CONFLICTS ACROSS SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Abstract
Climate change is increasingly recognized as a factor exacerbating conflicts across Africa, as highlighted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2015) and recent findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2023). Shifts in rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and extreme weather events are adversely affecting livelihoods and contributing to heightened social and political tensions, particularly in regions experiencing humanitarian crises like the Sahel (Global Risk Insights, 2019). This review seeks to address the empirical evidence regarding the statistical relationships between climate variables and conflict incidence in Africa. By examining the variations in climate impacts across different regions, the review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how climate change intensifies conflicts and to explore the differential effects experienced across various African regions
