Abstract

Conversation is a vital means of conveying information and forming connections, often conveying implicit meanings beyond the explicit. Paul Grice's Theory of Conversational Implicatures offers a framework for examining these implied meanings when conversational norms are breached. This study applies Grice's theory to pragmatically analyze character dialogues in Doris Lessing's "A Woman on a Roof." By exploring the implicit information revealed when characters deviate from communicative maxims, this research sheds light on how these cues shape the story's characters and narrative, providing deeper insights into Lessing's literary objectives.
