BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE: ENHANCING THE TECHNOLOGICAL LITERACY OF THE ELDERLY POPULATION FOR SAFE INTERNET NAVIGATION

Abstract

The senior population is facing an increasing need to adapt to the technological advancements that have been rapidly reshaping the society. However, despite their willingness to use the internet, a lack of adaptability to new methods has placed them at a disadvantage in keeping up with the evolving technological landscape. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for the elderly to have the necessary skills to navigate the internet has become more pressing. This paper aims to investigate the current behavior of the elderly on the internet and identify knowledge gaps and specific areas where support is needed. The paper explores the importance of equipping the elderly with the skills necessary to safely navigate the internet, beginning with an understanding of security threats that may be encountered online and how to react to them. The paper also provides insights into the current privacy and security concerns of the elderly and highlights specific tools and resources that can be utilized to address identified knowledge gaps. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for promoting the conversation around available resources and encouraging the use of available tools to build user confidence among the elderly.
